Here then is the history of the Bruins’ Uniforms …

Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: BostonBruinsPoster

#1.

1928-29        The NHL is a 10-team, 2-division league. The Bruins, in only their 5th year of existence (they joined the NHL for the 1924-25 season), finish the 1928-29 season a very impressive 26-13-5 – to lead the ‘American’ division…and soon thereafter, beating the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup! Of special note on the 1928-29 jersey: the unusual arm striping down the entire sleeve, the bear logo – which wouldn’t be seen again until the 3rd jerseys of the 90’s! Finally, note the fact at the Bruins’ jersey used to be BROWN & gold…the team would later switch over to the more recognizable black & gold in the 40’s.

#2.

1933-34        This jersey, synonymous with Bruins’ 30’s great Eddie Shore still has the brown & gold colour pattern and striping down the sleeves. By this time, the Bruins have changed their logo to the more familiar capital ‘B’…but still have yet to introduce the infamous spoked ‘B’. Note the size of the jersey…modern day players & their equipment would never fit into these!

#3.

1940-41        Another fantastic year for the Bruins! Bill Cowley leads the league in scoring, Boston finishes 1st in the NHL, and then go on to sweep the Red Wings 4-0 to capture another Stanley Cup. Note the giant ‘B’ has been converted to a football-style, large number and the ‘B’s’ have been shifted to the sleeves. The colour schematic, by this time, has been changed to the familiar Bruins black & gold. An interesting tidbit for Bruins’ fans…if a player’s number was two digits, and they were captain or an alternate captain, the ‘C’ or ‘A’ would be nestled in between the two numbers!

#4.

1948-49        This season marks the introduction of the infamous spoked ‘B’ or ‘hub logo’! If you look closely, you’ll notice ‘24’ & ‘49’ sandwiching the ‘B’ – these numbers commemorate the Bruins’ 25th anniversary (which took place in the ’49 season!). This jersey, synonymous with goaltender Frank Brimsek and the ‘Kraut Line’ (Milt Schmidt / Woody Dumart / Bobby Bauer), has been altered very minimally (design-wise) until present day.

#5.

1953-54        The ROAD jersey showcased here, has some interesting features to it: a thick, double striping is now at the base of the sweater (very unusual!), the ‘hub logo’ only the chest has been reverted back to the familiar capital ‘B’, and there are no player numbers on the sleeves. On the shoulders, you’ll find a golden ‘yoke’ – a design feature only a handful of teams have used. Over the course of their history, the Bruins have almost always had this sweater element – until the ROAD jerseys of the 90’s – which abandoned this unique feature.

#6.

1962-63        Regrettably, the Bruins teams of the early to mid 60’s were in quite a funk – usually finishing at or near the bottom of the NHL standings. The arrival of two key players would eventually help turn the franchise around towards the end of the decade: Bobby Orr & Phil Esposito! On this HOME jersey (the NHL rule of 54/55 stated that home teams were to wear coloured jerseys!) – note that the ‘hub logo’ is back! Small, black numbers are now on the sleeves, and the usual gold colour has been tweaked to a bright yellow!

#7.

1966-67        Arguably the game’s most influential and greatest player, Bobby Orr, laces up his skates for the first time this season! You’ll notice the HOME jersey showcased here bears the number ‘27’. As many Bruins’ enthusiasts would know, this is the number worn by Bobby for the pre-season/exhibition games only! He would switch over to the legendary #4 for the regular season. Notice that the colour has taken on more of the familiar golden tone…rather than the bright yellow of the 1962-63 version.

#8.

1969-70        Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito finish 1-2 in the scoring race, the Bruins finish 2nd behind the Blackhawks in the league standings – but of most importance – the Bruins win the Stanley Cup – for the first time since the ’41 season! This team, coached by Harry Sinden, and led by such greats as Orr, Esposito, Bucyk, Hodge, Cashman, Cheevers and McKenzie sweep the St. Louis Blues 4-0! This Cup series will always be remembered for the infamous & picturesque Bobby Orr ‘flying through the air’ goal – against netminder Glenn Hall. Note the laces on the neckline…a look viewed by many to symbolize ‘old-time hockey’. It was a shame when this look went by the wayside!

#9.

1973-74        Happy 50th birthday Boston Bruins! Unfortunately, the party poopers are the Philadelphia Flyers (aka the Broadstreet Bullies) who beat the Bruins in the Stanley Cup final 4 games to 2. Of special note on this ROAD jersey (in 70/71 the NHL decided that home teams wear white jerseys): the laces of past sweaters’ necklines have been replaced by a ‘V’ neck collar (shame!). If you look on the left sleeve/shoulder, you’ll see the special anniversary patch – which is actually a right profile of a giant bear standing on his hind legs. To his left & right are ‘Boston’ and ‘Bruins’…in the center of the patch (and partly overlapping the bear’s body) are ‘50th ANNIVERSARY 1973-1974’. At the bottom (which is actually the ground the bear is standing on) sits ‘NHL’.

#10.

1989-90        Though the Bruins are the darlings of the NHL – winning the Adams Division and finishing 1st in league standings with 101 points…this season marks the 2nd time in the past 3 years the Bruins lose to the Edmonton Oilers in the Cup final! This jersey, as worn by Bruins greats Ray Bourque & Cam Neely highlights the familiar Bruins’ head on the sleeves (a Bruins’ jersey tradition since 76-77) – which would stay on Boston jerseys right until present day. Note that the golden yoke – which has been on most Bruins’ jerseys – has been dropped by this time.

#11A.

1991-92

The 91-92 season – highlighted by the NHL’s 75th anniversary – showcased ‘throwback’ jerseys (worn periodically by the Original Six teams!)…complete with commemorative patches on the right shoulder area (worn by ALL NHL teams!). The Bruins’ ‘throwback’ was to their 1933-34 jersey with the unusual striping and the giant ‘B’ on the front. It’s interesting to note that the franchise opted not to showcase the original 1933-34 colours of brown & gold but decided to maintain the current black & gold!
#11B.
1992-93        The 1992-93 ROAD jersey seen here is the typical, current away uniform for the modern Bruins – a look they’ve kept right up to present day. Notice the lack of a golden ‘yoke’ on the shoulders (as seen in past sweaters!).
#11C.
1996-97        The 1996-97 sweater is the Bruins’ rendition of a 3rd jersey – something roughly half of NHL franchises took to in the ’96 year. As of 2000, most NHL franchises have 3rd jerseys (with the exception of a few clubs such as the Canadiens & Red Wings!). Fans had a real appetite for these new incarnations…originally whetted by the ‘throwback’ jerseys worn in the 1991-92 season.  Fans also have a real appetite for Stanley Cup Championships … LIKE 2011!!!
